Why in particular does mould grow in window reveals?

Besides in the corners of rooms, mould seems most prone to growing on window reveals: But why here, in particular? Surely here the sunlight should provide sufficient warmth, at least during the daytime. A look through the thermal imaging camera will shed some light on the matter: in spite of the sunlight, thermal bridges can also form in this area, and with them comes mould.

The outer edge of the window reveal is one of these thermal bridges. Temperatures drop repeatedly in this critical area which leads to precipitation, especially during the winter months. Moisture levels of between 70% and 85% combined with organic materials which feed mould growth, such as wallpaper or wallpaper paste, is enough for mould to settle down here for good. Read More

Mould likes to settle on wall surfaces when humidity values are at 70 to 85 percent. This is because the surface temperature of the interior walls drops causing condensation to form. At this, the rule of thumb applies: If the surface temperature of an interior wall falls to a dew point temperature below 12 dagrees Celsius – the room temperature is about 22 dagrees Celsius and the relative humidity is about 55 percent – condensation can be expected! Even the smallest quantities of Uranin, when diluted in water, have an enormous colouring capacity. Less than 1 g Uranin is enough to turn 1000 l of water fluorescent green. Around 500 g of Uranin could intensely colour sea areas of approximately 4000 m2 . And as a fluorescent dye, Uranin is highly suitable for rendering leakage points visible in leaking waste water pipes, on flat roofs and in humid cellars, or for testing of leaks in walls, pipes or tank systems.

Concentrated Uranin solutions are dark red and do not fluoresce. Since it was discovered 100 years ago that, when diluted, even the smallest quantities of this artificially produced substance could colour the largest volumes of water fluorescent green, the substance has been used, as still is until today, as a marking agent to investigate subterranean water currents.
