Trotec adviser: Tips against dry air – and for optimum room air humidity

More and more people suffer from breathing difficulties in winter because the mucous membrane becomes dry in their respiratory tract. The reason for this lies in home heating: although it keeps us nice and warm inside our own four walls, it also entails unhealthily dry air.  But we can help protect our mucous membrane as prevention against against allergies and annoying colds with optimum room air humidification. Our professional tips will help you avoid spending the next few months in too dry a room.

You can see whether the air humidity is too low, too high or just right in your home by looking at a thermo-hygrometer, like the attractively priced BZ05 from Trotec with integrated wellness display. As a rule of thumb, an optimum room air humidity ranges between 40 and 60 percent. A higher value is not recommended – as this increases the risk of mould in any otherwise spotless residence. And lower is only healthy for flu viruses – as these survive much longer in dry air, thereby increasing the risk of flu infections. In other words if the air humidity continually drops below 40 %, it’s time to take action …

10 professional tips for optimum room air humidity

  1. Furnish your home with plants

Furnish your home with house plants, as these release moisture. Because potting soil is fertile ground for mould, this should not be kept too moist.

  1. Use humidifiers

The compact ultrasonic air humidifiers B1 E, B 5 E and B 6 E from Trotec are highly effective, as they increase the air humidity via atomisers and nebulisers. To enable ultrasonic humidifiers to work hygienically, the water should be demineralised beforehand and ideally disinfected. We recommend using a Secosan stick in the water container of the ultrasonic air humidifier – this will continue to work there uninterrupted for six months.

  1. Use air purifiers or evaporators

Air purifiers of the Trotec AW-S series are the easy way to keep your home comfortably humidified.

  • The AirgoClean 105 S and AirgoClean 205 S route the sucked-in air past rotating humidifying discs, allowing them to absorb water molecules. The water molecules are absorbed via self-regulating cold evaporation, this ensuring optimal air humidity values.
  • At the same time, dirt particles such as pollen, animal hair and hose dust stick to the discs and are deposited in the water reservoir. The AW 20 S also provides the option of filtering the humidified air via HEPA – depending on the operating mode selected.
  1. Ventilate regularly

To expel the dry air outside and fill the room with fresh, humid air in exchange, you should fully open all your windows at least twice a day to ensure thorough ventilation.

  1. Place a water bowl on the heating

An effective method to increase air humidity: Simply place a bowl filled with water on your heating and let this evaporate evenly in the room air. Regularly replacing the water will ensure bacteria and mould do not stand a chance.

  1. Dry damp washing on the heating

Cloths and towels are ideally suitable for this. First hang them on a clothes drying rack for drying and then place the damp clothing on the heater until it is completely dry. Beware of overheating or fire hazards.

  1. Do not overheat your home

The higher the room temperature, the dryer the air. Try to limit the heat output to a room temperature of 22 to 24 degrees Celsius.

  1. Shower or take a bath

A tremendous amount of air humidity is produced when bathing or showering. Afterwards, open the window for a short time with the bathroom door closed and allow most of the moist air to escape outside. Then open the door so the moist air can distribute evenly throughout the home, thereby increasing the air humidity everywhere.

  1. Alternative methods for increasing air humidity

You can enhance air humidity by

  • installing an aquarium
  • cooking, baking and drying in the kitchen
  • installing an indoor fountain
  • drying your washing in the room
  1. Drinking helps

If you cannot do anything to combat dry air yourself – like in waiting rooms or aeroplanes for instance – you should drink plenty of water. This will help you to compensate for liquid losses on the mucous membrane and skin from inside.

The ultrasonic air humidifiers B1 E, B 5 E and B 6 E allow you to fill our room with optimally humidified breathing air at the press of a button. The tap water filling the reservoir is converted by the air humidifiers via ultrasound into a refreshing spray mist and – with the B 6 E for example – distributed throughout the room via a freely rotatable 360° mist nozzle. In this unit, six adjustable nebulisation levels enable room humidification lasting up to 16 hours.

The air purifiers AirgoClean 105 S and AirgoClean 205 S combine air humidification and air purification. Once operating, the air purifiers generate clean, pleasantly humid air you can really feel. What is more, the room air is cleaned effectively by reliably removing pollen, dust or animal hair – an ideal solution for people suffering from allergies.
