Cold and dry air are ideal conditions for many viruses. The warmer it gets, the more difficult it is for the corona virus to survive – because it is surrounded by a lipid layer. A fat layer that is not particularly heat-resistant, giving rise to justified hopes that the virus does not tolerate rising summer temperatures well. But we know exactly what viruses that cause respiratory diseases, like corona, are responsible for the immediate knock-out: A humidity of 50 % is deadly for these viruses and for bacteria!
All scientific research in recent years shows that the lifespan of viruses and bacteria depends crucially on air humidity. Thus, with the increasing dryness of the air in the room, the lifespan of the viruses increases dramatically. Below 40 % humidity, however, viruses remain infectious for hours and can be spread throughout the building and inhaled. Conversely, an optimum air humidity of around 50 % proves fatal within minutes for flu and cold viruses that have been coughed up.
Why is that? Sick people release a large number of viruses or bacteria when breathing and speaking, coughing and sneezing. These viruses or bacteria are embedded in a water jacket of bronchial mucus, saliva and dissolved salts, the so-called aerosols. These infectious droplets have almost 100% water saturation when they leave the respiratory tract. What happens now with this concentrated toxic mixture is decided by the humidity of the air on site – and of course you, because you can easily change it in your favour with the help of Trotec humidifiers!
Viruses live longer in dry air
If the aerosols meet a relative humidity below 40 %, there is an immediate, abrupt crystallization of the dissolved salts, as the aerosols release even more water into the dry air. The crystallised salts do not damage the viruses. Rather, the dry air preserves the viruses and keeps them active and infectious for longer. When these ‘dry’ aerosols are inhaled, the high humidity in the respiratory tract dissolves the crystallised salts by absorbing water. The infectious viruses are released on the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, penetrate into the mucous membrane cells and cause infections.
For most viruses, optimum air humidity means: Game over! Game over!
If the relative humidity in the office is between 40% and 60%, the salt concentration in the droplets increases so much that most viruses do not ‘survive’ this process. Incidentally, the risk of infection is also low at this optimum humidity level.
