Evergreen – measuring of residual moisture in screeds

The topic humidity measuring in screeds remains an evergreen. In circles of experts and even in the specialised press people don’t stop discussing and reporting about this issue.
The iba-institution Koblenz under administration of the diploma engineer (senior technical college) Hans-Joachim Rolof started a survey concerning this topic.

“Which method is actually used? Who measures electrically, who measures the CM-%? Which is the generally accepted measuring method?”

humidity measurements People had been interviewed who are concerned with the determination of residual moisture in screeds. Including 30% of representatives of the adhesives industry and flooring industry; 23% experts; 16% floor layers; 9% screed layers; 7% architects / site managers; 5% manufactures of measuring instruments and 10% others.

Concerning the question „how to measure“ the attendees answered:

Electrical moisture measurement (only): 14%
CM-method (only): 21%
Electrical moisture measurement and CM-method: 65%
Darr analysis: 19%
Microwave analysis: 2%

Note: Additionally to the electrical method and the CM-method namings of alternative methods (Darr analysis etc.) have been allowed. Especially experts measure moisture in building material on-site and in laboratories so that more than 100% of namings result.

The survey pointed out clearly that ¾ of those polled using both measure methods, the electrical moisture measurement and the CM-method (65% of the attendees), use the electrical moisture measurement as intermediate examination to determine a checkpoint for the Cm-method.

About 2/3 of those polled made good experiences with the CM-method, but about a half of them is satisfied with the electrical method.

In fact the combination of both methods is best to define moisture in screeds. With the electrical measuring instruments you can control how screed desiccates und the user needn’t conduct the complex CM-method at his visits at the construction sites. Finally if the metered values on the screen of the electronic moisture measuring instrument don’t change he although has to conduct the CM-method – there’s still no other way to handle it.

Quo Vadis flooring being a guest at Trotec

From June 19th to June 20th 2009 Quo Vadis flooring is a guest of it’s passive member Trotec. The members meet for an annually exchange of experiences at the exhibition and training facility of the Trotec company in Heinsberg. Two years ago it was only an idea, but now Michael Resch has not only the opportunity to show the members of Quo Vadis flooring the Trotec company but also parts of the district Heinsberg.

The Friday starts with a presentation about the topics building drying and measurement. In the evening a typically regional framework programme is planned which shall show the members the most western district of Germany.

On Saturday there’s the annually general meeting of Quo Vadis flooring (registered association) in the rooms of the training facility of the Trotec company.

The expansion of H1N1 (swine influenza)

Since March 2009 the A/H1N1 influenza virus, also known as swine influenza or pig flu, spreads unusually fast. After a local confined onset in Mexico the virus is now widespread on all continents just after a few months. The world health organisation (WHO) decided to raise the pandemic alert to phase 6. This step is done very rarely by the WHO.

The last time the WHO declared an influenza pandemic is 41 years ago. The risks of the swine influenza are hardly appreciable yet. The virus is new and it will probably modify itself – it’s possible that the virus becomes very hazard.

Just like a variety of respiratory diseases H1N1 is assigned by direct contact from human to human: via airborne infection while coughing and sneezing or because of touching contaminated surfaces. Because there’s still no vaccine against H1N1 prevention is the most effective strategy. Given of the increasing infections a specifically proceeding for stemming the onsets is absolutely necessary. Schools, universities, hospitals and other medical institutions, departments, public transit and wherever a lot of people meet infectious prevention is urgently advised.

Not only prevention is necessary to stem the pig flu. Already existing viruses have to be isolated consequently to prevent the population from more infections. Construction site exploration with audio frequency analysis

locating conductions One of our customers got the task to locate conductions in the soil on the area of a clinical centre before a building project. Restructuring of the entrance and the construction of a new building had been planned. For avoiding any troubles and interruptions during the construction the precise location of all conductions in the soil – electrical power, telecommunication, water, heating, gas, oxygen, coldness – had to be located and determined. For this purpose the company used the audio frequency analysis.

The origins and endpoints of the different conductions were known, but nobody knew how they proceeded in the ground. Under usage of an emitter all conductions had been transmitted actively with a frequency one by one and with the help of the audio frequency analysis all conductions in the study area had been located concerning their location, course and depth. The determined course of the conductions had been marked on the surface of the area, documented by an orthonogal measurement and finally assigned into a site plan.

Because of the audio frequency analysis the different conductions could be located on the construction site and the early resulting documentation of the actual state could ensure a high planning security.
