Trotec air-conditioning technology ensures optimum room climate during restoration of monumental art from Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral

Three years after the major fire at Notre-Dame, which destroyed large parts of the historic Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, construction and restoration work is still in full swing. “We will rebuild Notre-Dame,” said head of state Emmanuel Macron on the very evening of the disaster: “Because that is what the French expect.” The restoration of the Notre-Dame de Paris structure is being carried out under the scientific and technical control of the DRAC Île-de-France regional heritage teams. Specialized companies from all over France have been contracted to restore damaged artwork and furnishings.

Trotec supplies professional air-conditioning technology for restoration work

A very special exhibit has been undergoing restoration at the Gobelin Manufacture (at the French Manufacture nationale des Gobelins) since July 2022: The monumental carpet of Notre-Dame with gigantic dimensions of 25 x 7 meters. Until the fire of 2019, the colorful carpet regularly adorned the floor of the cathedral. Although it was spared by the fire, it was affected by dust, ash and by the firefighting operations. In addition, the past centuries have left their mark in the form of cracks in the material and moth holes in the carpet, which was once commissioned by King Charles X. The carpet is now in a state of disrepair. The carpet is to be restored to its original splendor by 2024 at the latest, when Notre Dame Cathedral will be reopened to worshippers and the public. For this to succeed, both craftsmanship and technical expertise are required to protect the valuable exhibit from damaging room climate fluctuations during restoration.

A challenge that the traditional tapestry manufactory, which is now owned by the French state after its foundation in 1607, meets with professional climate control technology from Trotec.

Constant temperature and humidity is important

Constant temperature and humidity are essential for the preservation of art and valuable exhibits. 20 degrees Celsius and 50 percent RH are optimal. In order to create this optimum climate in the workrooms of the manufactory, air conditioning units of the PT series from Trotec are used. In contrast to permanently installed air-conditioning systems, the mobile air-conditioning units convince with an unrivaled high flexibility.

The robust and powerful units in narrow design fit through any door and into any elevator. Transport rollers and optional crane lugs facilitate handling during transport or in the warehouse. Thanks to quick-release couplings on the connection set, the external heat exchangers can be put into operation in no time at all. Set up, connect the heat exchanger, plug in the power supply, and you’re ready to go – all in just a few minutes, making it ideal for use in changing locations.

Monumental works of art require outstanding cooling performance

Even more important than flexibility is ensuring a constantly cool working environment – even in record summer temperatures. Because then, due to the large windows that provide plenty of daylight, the rooms would heat up extremely quickly, sometimes leading to damage to the centuries-old wool. Where conventional mobile air-conditioning units reach their limits, the PT series air-conditioning units come up trumps with their high cooling capacity. Up to 100,000 Btu/h always provide the necessary level of cooling, even in extreme temperature environments.
