New Harvard Study: Is Omicron as dangerous as Delta? Why TAC high-performance air purifiers continue to be indispensable in measures for better air hygiene.

TAC high-performance air purifiers from Trotec filter infectious viruses (e.g. SARS-CoV-2 and flu viruses), bacteria, harmful fine dust, mould spores, allergens and other pollutant particles from the room air. The mobile air purifiers help to reduce the spread of the corona virus during the corona pandemic and protect schoolchildren in class, senior citizens and people in need of care in old people’s homes, workers in offices as well as citizens in public institutions from indirect infection with the covid19 pathogen.

Several tens of thousands of TAC V+ high-performance air purifiers have been in use for health protection since the beginning of the pandemic, for example in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the ATOS clinic in Cologne or the German Embassy School in Tehran. For good reasons!

Air hygiene measures protect against corona infection and spread

The corona pandemic has made it clear how fundamentally important hygienically clean breathing air is for all of us to live together. In the ‘’pre-corona era’’, harmful fine dust was long considered the greatest challenge when it came to measures for improving air hygiene. The high infectiousness of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which, according to leading aerosol researchers, spreads more than 99 per cent via indoor air of inadequately ventilated rooms, has seriously changed the view of air quality. It is now scientific consensus that high air quality is much more effective in protecting against infectious airborne virus particles than rigid distance rules and increased disinfection measures.

TAC air purifiers with HEPA filters of filter class H14 (certified according to EN 1822) remove more than 99.995 per cent of airborne pathogens from indoor air, thus preventing them from spreading and being inhaled. This is not only useful in the current pandemic. The number of people suffering from allergies and asthma has been increasing for years. For these people, improved indoor air quality means noticeable relief and reduction from their symptoms. But according to American Harvard researchers, the dangers posed by the SARS-CoV-2 virus have not yet been averted – even if the currently milder course of the disease of the omicron variant leads us to believe that.

Harvard study: Omicron just as deadly as Delta and other variants

In a recent study, Harvard researchers argue that the omicron variant is just as deadly as Delta and other variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, Minerva University and Harvard Medical School examined data form over 130,000 Covid19 patients infected with the Corona virus between December 2020 and February 2022. They wanted to investigate whether the omicron variant really is milder than other variants. After analysing the data, the scientists came to the following conclusion: the risk of a more severe course with hospitalisation and the mortality in the analysed period were ‘’almost identical’’.

‘’The variant B.1.1.529 (omicron) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was previously reported to be more transmissible but less severe than other SARS-CoV-2 variants,’’ the scientists write in the introduction to the study, which was published in advance as a preprint on Reserchsquare. However, this assumption could possibly be wrong: ‘’We found that the risks of hospitalisation and mortality were almost identical between the periods. Our analysis suggests that the intrinsic severity of the Omicron variant may be as severe as earlier variants.’’

Four external circumstances have weakened the omicron wave

Kristian Schneider, a scientist with a search focus on modelling epidemiological processes, interpreted the results of the Harvard scientists on behalf of FOCUS online. The news portal quotes him as saying that there is ‘’basically something to the study’’. Schneider refers to what he sees as ‘’problems’’ in the evaluation of the data. However, he sees four important findings in the study as to why the omicron wave was milder than the delta wave.

  1. More young people are becoming infected: children and young people without previous illnesses and risk factors are particularly affected by the omicron wave. Therefore, the hospitalisation rate is much lower.
  1. Booster vaccination works: since the omicron wave only came about when the majority of people had been vaccinated and had received their boosters, the courses were less severe than with the previous delta wave.
  2. Improved treatment options: while drugs to treat Covid-19 were scarce at the beginning of the Corona pandemic, doctors in the omicron wave have effective drugs to specifically treat people who are sick.
  3. Omicron is less treatment-intensive: we all remember the frightening images of corona patients who had to be artificially ventilated. These therapies were very personnel-intensive, and at the same time sufficient capacity had to be created in a very short time. Since the omicron variant, unlike the delta variant, does not settle so deeply in the lungs, treatment is much easier.

What does that mean exactly?

There are definitely external reasons why the omicron wave is currently milder than the previous delta wave. We also know this from the delta wave, in which the number of infections fell as the outside temperatures rose. However, these factors do not prove that infection with the omicron variant is less lethal than infection with the delta variant.

There is also still the not improbable possibility that new mutations of the coronavirus will appear emerge, with characteristics that are currently difficult to predict. If you want to be on the safe side and protect yourself and your environment as best as possible against airborne risks, you will find that the TAC high-performance air purifiers offer a high level of protection against airborne risks, even with new virus variants and changing circumstances – with scientifically proven effectiveness.

TAC high-performance air purifier – effective against all known variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus

Research associations, universities such as the Goethe University in Frankfurt and, above all, the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich tested the effectiveness of mobile TAC V+ air purifiers very early in the corona pandemic and scientifically proved their effectiveness in protecting against corona infection.

99.995% of virus-laden aerosols, which would float around for hours in insufficiently ventilated rooms without technical air purification and with only insufficient ventilation, are removed from the room air by high-performance air purifiers from Trotec. It only takes 6 to 15 minutes for a Trotec high-performance air purifier to halve the virus load in an 80 square metre area. In smaller rooms, the halving even takes place after just 3 minutes!

The TAC series: five models, two variants – highly effective protection against the dangers of viruses and fine dust

Five models in two device variants – each with proven filter effectiveness for protection against airborne pathogens and pollutants make the TAC series a flexible and scalable air purification solution for indoor spaces of all types and sizes.

  • Extremely robust construction for professional use
  • High flexibility of use due to mobility; simply set up where a high level of protection against airborne risks is required
  • Air volume up to 2,100 m³
  • H14 high-performance HEPA filter according to EN 1822
  • Constant air volume flow, even with increasing filter contamination
  • Fully automatic operation through flexible programming
