Often contact lens wearers in particular have to struggle with irritated eyes in the office. Because if the contact lens does not float on the tear film as it normally does, but lies directly on the cornea, the eye quickly becomes irritated. The reason for this is relatively simple: We blink less during screen work, which inhibits the supply of moisture, and then the dry air in the office tears open the tear film. There are two solutions for this: One is to consciously blink. And one using professional humidifiers from Trotec.
If our eyes have too little tear fluid, the lens comes into direct contact with the cornea. This causes an unpleasant foreign body sensation and irritation of the cornea. This process can be triggered, on the one hand, by long screen work, which suppresses the closing of the eyelid, akin to a reflex, and inhibits the supply of moisture to the eye. It can also, on the other hand, be caused by office air, which is often too dry, and thus triggers the increased evaporation of the tear film in the eye. Therefore, if your eyes are irritated, you should make sure that there is enough moist, fresh air in the room. Incidentally, practically all scientific studies show that the entire immune defence of the mucous membranes depends crucially on the humidity of the room air. This is because as air humidity decreases, the removal of microorganisms and viruses in the mucous membranes decreases given the drying out of the cilia, meaning they can no longer perform their cleansing function. In addition, from an air humidity level of 50 %, the spread of viruses – including the corona virus! – and bacteria in the room air is reduced. This is because infected persons coughing and distributing fine droplets together with influenza or cold viruses in the air causes the air in the room to dry out, which preserves the pathogens and keeps them infectious for longer. However, in the optimum range of 40 to 60 % relative humidity, the droplets shrink only as much as to bring about an increase in salt concentration – and the germs and microorganisms are killed. In this way, you minimise the risk of infection in the long term!
No dry eyes and reduced risk of infection and contagion through professional air humidification
This is the easiest way to prevent dry air from becoming a health hazard: Measure the humidity in your office and at home at continuous intervals. The measuring instrument used for this is a so-called room thermohygrometer, such as the bargain BZ05 or BZ06 from Trotec.
