Trotec high-performance heating units ensure that the construction of the world’s highest dam progresses according to plan

Efficient, green and powerful: all over the world, monumental dams and hydroelectric power plants are being built to generate green electricity. In Germany alone, around 7,700 hydropower plants cover a not inconsiderable part of the total electricity demand. Worldwide, there are estimated to be between 45,000 and 60,000 plants – and the number is increasing all the time.

The dam wall of the highest hydroelectric power plant Rogun in Central Asia will be about 335 metres high when the project of superlatives is completed in 2033 with technical support from Trotec. The hydroelectric power plant is being built by the Italian construction company Webuild spA on the Vakhsh River in the Pamirs, a high mountain range in Central Asia. It is planned that the power plant with a capacity of 3,600 MW (roughly equivalent to the output of three nuclear power plants) will double Tajikistan’s current energy production. For the construction of the Rogun dam in Tajikistan, extremely robust high-performance heating units from the TEH series from Trotec are used, which have been specially developed for large-scale heating scenarios even under the most adverse environmental conditions.

Challenges in dam and tunnel construction

Hydropower is an ecologically sensible way of generating energy and storing water for irrigation and drinking water supply. However, the construction of a hydropower plant is complex and poses many challenges for the executing companies. Due to increasingly monumental constructions, tight schedules and growing cost pressure, the construction of dam projects is usually carried out without winter breaks. Work is carried out even in snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures.

  • The concrete must be heated accordingly to ensure a safe setting process.
  • In order to proceed as planned with the construction of a hydroelectric power plant despite winter temperatures and sub-zero temperatures and also to ensure the circulation of the supporting suspension produced with water, the facilities for the production of the suspension must be heated accordingly.

Heating solutions from Trotec – tried and tested on large construction sites

Whether to accelerate drying times, to meet completing deadlines, as protection against frost damage or to prevent loss of rent − when it comes to effective mobile heating solutions in civil engineering, construction companies and planners can fully rely on the economical TEH 200, TEH 300 and TEH 400 from Trotec.

With up to 120 kW heating power, Trotec electric heating units from the TEH series generate an enormous 9,000 cubic metres of hot air per hour – immediately available heat that can be transported over a distance of up to 100 metres to the respective heating location using warm air hoses.
