Coronavirus “floats” in the air: How you can reduce the risk of infection in the office thanks to professional humidification

Restrictions are loosening. Offices are also getting fuller with workers returning after working from home. However, if you rely solely on distancing regulations and masks to contain the corona virus, there is a high risk of infection. It is especially in closed office rooms with low humidity that the risk of infection lurks in the form of so-called aerosol particles, i.e. tiny exhaled infectious floating particles. This is why physicist Roland Netz from the Berlin Freie Universität recommends professional humidification. This means the droplets cannot shrink so quickly and tend to sink to the ground as heavier droplets.

You probably know about ridicule amongst colleagues in the office about someone who splutters when they speak. When speaking, coughing or sneezing, we release not only large, visible droplets into the room in a sort of mist, but also tiny aerosols in much larger quantities. However, while large droplets sink to the ground after only about 1.5 meters due to their weight – which is why the regulations prescribe a distance of 1.5 meters – infectious aerosols measuring only a thousandth of a millimetre stay in the air “for several hours, in fact’’. This makes aerosol infections even more insidious – invisible infectious particles that float in the air for a long time and can still be inhaled, maybe even hours later.

Rely on professional humidifiers in the office

According to the findings of Berlin physicist Roland Netz, if the air in a room is too dry, the water in the particles evaporates, making them smaller and allowing them to float around in the air for even longer. In terms of closed rooms, Netz says: “relative humidity is important.’’ This should not be too low because the droplets then cannot shrink as quickly. Moreover, heavier droplets tend to sink to the ground. “Also the mucous membranes will otherwise dry out and become more susceptible to viruses.” We also know from further scientific studies that maintaining a relative humidity of 40 to 60% helps to limit the spread and survivability of coronavirus within buildings.

Professional air humidification reduces the risk of infection and contagion

Medical specialists also emphasise that we can reduce the risk of infection by increasing the humidity in buildings. Increasing air humidity through humidification to around 50% thus reduces the transmission risk. Humidifiers and air coolers from Trotec can help here. The hygrostat-controlled Trotec humidifiers from the B-E and B series ensure optimally regulated humidity and purified room air. And the air coolers of the PAE series not only humidify the air, but also provide refreshing evaporative cooling in your home in the summer.

All models in this series, such as the B 24 E/B 25 E or the B 400 are also hygrostat-controlled. Its performance capacity ranges – depending on the model – from 0.6 litres to 60 litres per hour. Some air humidifiers can be deployed in rooms of up to 420 m². Flexibility is the trump card here. Besides the many individual features or functions it offers, the B 500 model, for example, features a special remote control as well. It’s hard to imagine more comfort than this.
