Coronavirus: Corona-Virus: A self-sewn makeshift mouth-and-nose protector – very beautiful, very colourful and very, very impractical

At first glance it looks ingeniously simple: just sew those missing everyday masks yourself, choose your own colour, choose your design – and off you go! At second glance, reality clouds an all too rosy view: Wash, wash, wash again and do it at 90°C. Or boil it in water on the stove for 5 minutes. Before the first use. And before each new use. Because otherwise every mask really becomes a veritable virus spinner. But daily washing uses a lot of electricity – and in the long run it will also become quite expensive.

The instructions of the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on the hygienic handling of the self-stitched and so-called ‘makeshift mouth-and-nose protection’ are as bone dry as they are unmistakable: “Remember that you may already have fallen ill yourself without realising it: If you have sewn the makeshift mouth-and-nose protector, it is essential that you wash it before wearing it for the first time. (…) Hence, you must: Wash before the first use! Auxiliary Mouth and Nose Protectors can either be washed in the washing machine at 90°C or boiled in water on the stove (5 minutes). Afterwards the makeshift mouth-nose-protection must dry. And before re-use, the Ministry warns: “Before re-use, the makeshift mouth-nose protector must again either be washed in the washing machine at 90°C or boiled in water (5 minutes) on the stove and then dried.

A self-sewn makeshift mouth and nose protector is not a sustainable solution

So far, so good, or rather, so bad: The self-sewn, makeshift protective masks for mouth-and-nose must be kept hygienic, otherwise the wearers and all of us will soon be flying viruses just around the ears. Because a contaminated face mask will help no one – except the virus! However, even a well-maintained, self-stitched face mask will soak through in the long run just like a disposable mask. But in contrast to a disposable mask, which you simply dispose of, you naturally ask yourself with a self-sewn one, what do I do with it when I’m out and about? Into a paper bag, for example? Or put it in a special cloth bag for used makeshift mouth-and-nose protective masks? Then you would have set up a mobile virus depot for everyone on the road.

And when you’re at home again: Boil the mask on the stove straight away? Or put it in the washing machine separately at 90°C? As a convenient but inefficient single wash cycle? Or do you want to collect as many masks as necessary until the machine is full – that is, until a full wash cycle is really worthwhile? Instead of saving energy, all this will consume a lot of electricity in the long run – and will also be very expensive for the individual.
