What you really need to know: The 4-point check for ascertaining inferior mouth-nose masks without any protective effect

The corona pandemic has been accompanied by a worldwide rise in fraud and criminal activities associated with the trade in respiratory protection masks. The media have been reporting on a daily basis about the sale of confiscated protective masks – sometimes with fake certificates, in inferior quality and frequently manufactured under horrendously unhygienic conditions. In no way do these products involve masks offered for sale clandestinely on some shady black market. According to a report published in Den Haag by the European police authority Europol, criminals and organised gangs have rapidly adapted their methods. The fake masks have consequently found their way into normal commerce – even via official channels.

Harmful masks are flooding onto the European market to be sold unwittingly by retailers and pharmacies

Particularly perfidious is the latest scam by unscrupulous profiteers, whose desire to make fast money leads them to omit the protective non-woven filter material in the so-called mouth-nose masks and replace this by a simple – yet totally ineffective – paper fleece in usually multilayer masks. Masks without the non-woven filter material cannot be recognised at first glance, as only the elementary filter layer has been “economised”. But in practice this economy measure can have catastrophic consequences!

Without a non-woven filter material, the mouth-nose protective masks generally referred to as surgical masks have only a very limited protective effect. Even worse, the masks become imbued with moisture extremely quickly, this further increasing the risk of droplet infection!

So if you want to be sure your masks actually contain a non-woven filter material, you really need to examine them according to the Trotec 4-point check!

You can ascertain whether a mouth-nose mask contains the vitally important non-woven filter material and otherwise fulfils the quality requirements for a safe mask very easily with the following checks. To do so, you need to “sacrifice” one of the masks – but this destroyed mask might well save you or other people from the serious consequences of an infection with the potentially lethal coronavirus!

  1. The fit
To adjust the mask optimally to different face shapes, high-quality mouth-nose masks have a nose clip that can be shaped individually. This allows the mask fit to be adapted to a person’s facial features. An unmistakable sign of an inferior mask is a nail clip that cannot be adjusted anatomically. If gaps result in spite of bending the nose clip, and the mask does not close off perfectly over the facial skin, you should keep well away from using other masks of this type!
  2. The water test
Use the mask like a coffee filter and pour water from above onto the mask surface. A high-quality mask should prevent water from penetrating for as long as possible. You can do this test quite simply by placing a mask filled with water on a serviette immediately after filling with water. If the serviette becomes moist after contact with the mask, this is also an important indication that the material from which the mask is made will become imbued with moisture very quickly owing to the absence of a non-woven filter material – which means it will only have a limited or substandard protective effect.
  3. The filter layer test
Even when things are tough due to a shortage of masks: Cut a mask at the outer edge and check whether the middle layer is made from paper or a fibrous non-woven material (melt-blown filter). Melt-blown is a non-woven material made from extremely fine, melt-spun microfibres. Only masks with this special protective non-woven material have a filter effect and prevent penetration by pathogens. However, if the middle layer is obviously made from paper or inferior-quality microfibres that are not “spun-melt”, the most important component has been omitted from this mask: namely the non-woven filter material – at the cost of your health and that of others!
  4. The fire test
The crucial test for high-quality mouth-nose masks is the fire test. The non-woven material used for masks is not flammable! If you hold a lighter or candle below the non-woven filter material, the material should not catch fire but only melt instead. However, if the mask continues to burn by itself after removing the flame, you can reliably assume that only ineffective junk material has been used in the production – and not high-quality non-woven filter material!

Try for yourself and don’t just rely on positive words!

No matter whether you wish to order your masks in bulk directly from China or from corresponding intermediaries as an entrepreneur, authority or medical institution – or appraise the quality of your masks as an end customer. Don’t trust the promises of sellers and the deceptive print on the packaging. China doesn’t question requests to print anything on packaging, regardless of the content. It’s best to ascertain the quality of masks for yourself, so as not to be duped by products with inferior quality and almost no protective effect whatsoever!
