What you need to know about infrared heaters

Let’s start right away with the questions that deepen our basic knowledge of infrared heaters. Today, we will take a look at how IR heaters work and how they actually generate this pleasant warmth. In the next issue, we will explain how these heaters are exactly set up and which different heating elements, the so-called ‘tubes’, they can be fitted with. Afterwards, we will then be well on our way to finding the suitable IR heater for your patio …

Selective and efficient heat without warm-up time

Infrared rays can best be imagined as summer sun rays. They too generate warmth directly on your skin without warming up the surrounding air. It is exactly according to this principle that the modern infrared heaters from Trotec work as well. They, likewise, do not heat the ambient air using convection. Instead, they give off their warmth directly to the bodies of the persons and objects on site. These store the heat for a longer period than air does and then release it as secondary radiation. The warmth produced by IR heaters, therefore, has a very natural and pleasant effect on us as well.

This is made possible by the applied electromagnetic infrared radiation, which causes the molecules to oscillate whenever it encounters solid surfaces, thereby creating a comfortable feeling of warmth. The intense heat is produced when it is needed and without preheating – a clean way of heating without causing noises, smells or dust circulation, and is hence suitable for allergy sufferers as well. Since infrared radiant heaters convert a majority of the energy directly into heat, they are particularly energy-efficient compared to, for example, hot air fans.

A distinction is made between short wave, medium wave and long wave radiation. When it comes to patio use, short wave infrared A radiation is the best because this will reliably reach you even in wind and rain. By the way, professional radiant heaters for use in the food service industry and for private use almost always use infrared A radiation.
