The best way to start is to clean your bike conscientiously to discover any damage like rust stains or leaks. When you’re done with cleaning, you should definitely check some technical details of your motorbike. This includes inspecting the battery, the oil level and the lighting, as well as a check-up of the brakes and brake linings. The tyres deserve closer attention: if you don’t ride your vehicle during the winter, it is wise to unload some of the weight off the tyres to guarantee that the tyres don’t bulge and still run smoothly. You should also make sure that there are no porous spots or cuts which could lessen your driving safety. The tread depth is another factor which is mainly responsible for the safety of your motorbike. A minimum depth of 1mm is required for motorcycles by law but the AA recommends a tread depth of at least 2mm so that you are prepared in case of wet roads for example.

And last but not least: the tyre pressure!

In order to ensure that you drive safely and comfortably, the tyre pressure needs to be checked regularly. The ideal tyre pressure is specified in the technical manual of your motorbike. Usually there is a distinction between different driving situations like the applied load – riding alone or with a passenger or luggage – and the speed. But from experience, tyre producing companies can tell that most motorcyclists fail to make sure that the tyre pressure matches their driving situation.

Though it can be so easy: with the Trotec Tyre Pressure Gauge BY10 you are able to check your tyre pressure whether you’re at home or on the road. Because the ideal tyre pressure of your motorcycle not only increases your safety, it also reduces road resistance and therefore is responsible for saving fuel. In fact the wrong tyre pressure can cause a severe reduction of the durability of your tyres: if the pressure is too low, the tyres start to heat up a lot, which can damage your tyres. On the other hand, if the pressure is too high the consequence may be an uneven wearing of your tyres.

And remember: always check the pressure of your tyres when they are cold because hot tyres may have a 0.5 bar excess pressure which will regulate itself automatically once the tyres cool down again.

Now that your bike is spick and span and the technical check up is finished successfully too, there is nothing to stop you from putting on your helmet and going for a road trip because real bikers are “born to be wild”…

Stains on the external walls of buildings are not just unsightly, they can be a real eyesore. Such discolourations can easily disfigure otherwise fetching house façades and spoil the look of whole houses. Yet what many people who decide to take the matter into their own hands often fail to realise is that by scrubbing away at the stains or by seeking to conceal them under a thick lick of paint, they only are treating the symptoms and not the cause.

What is first needed before any steps are taken to remove the stains is a thorough inspection of both the staining and the type of building materials involved. Only then will you be able to get a clear picture of the extent of the damage and only then will you be able to get to the root of the problem. Dark streaks or staining on the outer walls, for example, can be a clear indication for leaking pipes or rainwater from rusty drainpipes or overflowing gutters that has worked its way into the brick or plasterwork. Unfortunately, such stains can equally have a variety of other causes. Strange as it may seem, they can even come from inside the building: rooms that are not aired or heated properly provide ideal breeding grounds for mould and mildew which thrive on moist and dank conditions. The damage caused by mould can be extensive and cost thousands of pounds to rectify.

That’s why a data logger makes so much sense. Data loggers provide you with accurate information on the temperature and the relative humidity in the rooms in which they have been installed. Ideally they should be used over a period of at least 14 days so that enough information can be collected. The Smart Graph software included in the scope of delivery then allows you to read out the data and carry out an exact assessment.

Such an assessment would reveal all you really need to know about the room climate. It shows you whether the average temperature and the mean relative humidity recorded by the data logger are within the guidelines recommended by most experts in the field. These guidelines state that the average room temperature should be 20C and that the relative humidity should be somewhere between 30-65%. The graphic generated by the software also shows where exactly the temperature dropped dangerously close to the dew point. As soon as the temperature drops lower than the dew point, condensation forms and is soaked up by the walls. And if the building materials that are used are colder than the dew point temperature of the air that comes into contact with them, then this will also result in condensation and inevitably dark staining on the inner and even outer walls.

There can be a number of reasons why the temperature drops below the dew point: it can be because of the way the room is used or it can have something to do with the faults in the construction of the building. Such information can prove to be invaluable both to tenants and landlords who want to get to the bottom of the cause of the unsightly discolourations in order to carry out the necessary repairs and stop costs from spiraling.

So although investing in a data logger might just seem a small step, it is in fact a giant leap towards checking and controlling the climate in your house, home or flat.

The craftsmen among our readers will know what I mean when I say that some of their customers still have some pretty outdated preconceptions with regard to their craft. Fumbling around with a folding rule, for example, can be make people look quite inept and it can be time-consuming, too – especially with a customer breathing down your neck while their trying to protect their valued possessions from potential harm. One of the many innovative initiatives which caused quite a stir at this much-acclaimed venue was the state-of-the-art measuring technology program for leak detection in drinking water systems which we at TROTEC took great pride in presenting exclusively. The LD-series is based on the principle of combined detection, using acoustic and pressure sensors to systematically locate possible leaks. The program is made up of the following individual components:

• The LD5L wireless data logger, which is positioned in the respective pipe system in order to constantly measure the sound level before transmitting the data it has collected to a passing measuring vehicle.

• The LD5DL pressure data logger, which monitors the pressure status in water supplies both quickly and reliably. The high sampling rate of up to ten measurements per second enables the logger to record even the smallest of pressure surges before storing the data for later assessment and analysis using the software included in the scope of delivery.

• The LD20PC multifunctional correlator, which is designed to pinpoint any possible leaks in pressure lines. The device registers the impact sound at different points in the pipe network and is then able to detect the exact position of the leak by comparing the length of time which has elapsed between echoes.

• The LD 6000 combi detector, which is designed expressly for mobile leak detection and the acoustic location of water pipes. The device, which is the first of its kind worldwide, is excellently suited for versatile use as a means for mapping out routes, narrowing down the possible position of a leak or for pinpointing leaks accurately and reliably. When used in combination with the LD 6000 H2 hydrogen sensor, the combi detector can also be employed to detect leaks using trace gas. The optionally available LD-PULS pulse wave generator, which can be used to detect the position of non-metallic pressure water pipes, rounds off this package admirably.

This means that TROTEC now offers a complete and comprehensive program designed to assess the condition of drinking water systems for water suppliers and metrological service providers alike.

The reaction among experts and professionals can only be termed as extremely positive. The specialists responsible for pipework infrastructure in town councils , local authorities and large industrial areas showed great interest in this new product series which has been designed specially with the intention of making their job easier and even more efficient.

The answer: neither of them is better.
