Why in particular does mould grow in window reveals?

IC080LV

Besides in the corners of rooms, mould seems most prone to growing on window reveals: But why here, in particular? Surely here the sunlight should provide sufficient warmth, at least during the daytime. A look through the thermal imaging camera will shed some light on the matter: in spite of the sunlight, thermal bridges can also form in this area, and with them comes mould.

The outer edge of the window reveal is one of these thermal bridges. Temperatures drop repeatedly in this critical area which leads to precipitation, especially during the winter months. Moisture levels of between 70% and 85% combined with organic materials which feed mould growth, such as wallpaper or wallpaper paste, is enough for mould to settle down here for good. Read More

Why does mould always start growing in the corners of a room?

tro_blog_banner_t260_ic080lv_en

Why does mould always first appear in the corners of a room? And what does this have to do with the notorious “thermal bridges”? You’ll find the answer to these questions in our latest blog – including tips on how you can track down potential risk areas for mould growth in all corners of your home, with help of our two innovative devices…

Mould likes to settle on wall surfaces when humidity values are at 70 to 85 percent. This is because the surface temperature of the interior walls drops causing condensation to form. At this, the rule of thumb applies: If the surface temperature of an interior wall falls to a dew point temperature below 12 dagrees Celsius – the room temperature is about 22 dagrees Celsius and the relative humidity is about 55 percent – condensation can be expected! Veterinary thermography: that your pet may always feel good!

tro_blog_banner_veterinaerthermografie

Just like with the humans the body temperature of animals gives conclusion about their state of health. Minimal variation of the temperature for example can give a hint to a dysfunction of the vital functions. Especially during the first warm days of the year it’s extra irritating, because you want to play outside with your dog or go on a ride with your horse. With thermographic examination disease symptoms can be easily diagnosed at an early stage.

Fresh air, clear sky and the sun is shining. Dog owners can finally go on a long walk with their dog and horse owners gallop over meadows and fields – unless your animal is healthy. To enjoy those beautiful coming month with your pet, you should point out on examination through thermographics. Read More

Building thermography: Let the season begin!

Thermography: infrared camera bargains

Daylight saving time is over again and the clocks have been turned back that precious hour. Which means two things: Only 41 days to go to Christmas! (Surely there’s no harm in being reminded, is there? After all you can’t have forgotten last year’s madcap, last-minute Christmas shopping spree!) And that now the days are growing shorter it won’t be long before temperatures drop sharply and the cold sets in. During the autumn and winter months the difference between the outside temperature and the temperature inside homes, houses and buildings up and down the country is far greater than at any other time of the year. Which is why this is the ideal time of the year for taking thermographic images!

Building thermography is a highly effective means of detecting defects in the construction of buildings as well as missing or ineffective insulation. Such defects are either the result of wear and tear on the building or shoddy workmanship on the part of the builder. An infrared camera can pinpoint these problem areas accurately and reliably and provide you with conclusive evidence that can be used to remedy the situation. The defects the camera detects are not only the chinks and gaping holes in the building’s insulation that are costing half of all Brits at least £100 a year, they are also the defects which are the root of a whole myriad of problems, ranging from uncomfortable drafts and mould formation to thermal bridges and ice dams – problems that can cause home and building owners, tenants and their families endless grief and frustration.

With oil and gas prices hitting an all-time high, many home owners are already keen to stop the precious heat from escaping from their flats and houses and to relieve the bludgeoning burden which the recent hikes in energy prices have put on their strapped household budgets. In addition, many of us are dedicated to cutting down on needless waste and doing something about reducing CO emissions and our collective carbon footprint.

So, in order to ensure that you as a provider of thermographic service are best-prepared – and kitted out – at the start of the thermographic season, we would like to provide you with just the right thermography bargains at just the right time. Read More

Don’t let the cowboys take you to the cleaners

don't trust any rogue assessor for thermographic reports

Contracting a company to carry out a thermographic survey makes good financial sense. And as far as saving the planet goes, it shows that you do care about the amount of energy that is being wasted while you are heating your home and that you would like to do something about improving your eco-credentials – as well as just saving some whales.

A thermographic report can tell home owners and tenants alike just where the weak spots in the insulation of their homes or flats are and what measures need to be taken to stop the precious energy from simply seeping out through walls, doors, roofs or windows into the atmosphere and beyond.

Which is where the cowboys come in…

Just like in any other branch, there are countless companies or small firms operating in the energy-saving business that do not have your best interests at heart. In fact they have next to no interest at all in assessing just how much energy you are losing through poor or inadequate insulation or building or structural flaws and what steps need to be taken to right what has gone awfully wrong. This is because rogue assessors – just like rogue builders or rogue traders – have one thing which they lack apart from experience in the field and proper conduct – and that’s a conscience. These crooks, and we really must call them by their real names in order to safeguard those who need to be protected, are not interested in saving you money or providing you with a fair service. They are only interested in lining their own pockets and maximising their profit. Often at a staggering cost to you.

According to the VPB, an organisation comprising private home builders and house owners, there are, unfortunately, more than just a few rotten apples in the barrel. The black sheep they identified have much in common. The most popular tricks of the trade include performing thermographic surveys in conditions which render the results worthless and carrying out measurements without the necessary expertise that enables the user to correctly interpret the findings and propose the required recommendations. Strong sunlight, fog or persistent rain, for example, can distort the readings acquired using an infrared camera no matter how sophisticated the technology. And by saving on software which supports or substantiates otherwise conclusive findings, many a fraudulent contractor is robbing himself – and you – of the means that would allow them to provide an uncontroversial report which shows the true situation – and the steps that need to be taken.

So if you are planning on contacting a contractor, look out for the telltale signs that distinguish the respectable ones from the rogues and make sure that you do not fall prey to false promises or fraudulent offers.  A cowboy assessor – just like a cowboy builder – can cost you much more than you had ever banked on.

Which is why you may decide to hire an infrared camera yourself. For as little as €39.00 a day. Complete with operating instructions and the advice you need to make sure that you are choosing the correct camera for your own individual application.

Or call us on +49 (0) 2452 962 120 if you would like us to send one of our specialists round. They are all certified according to DIN EN 473!

Don’t get caught out by a cowboy. Go with the good guys. Go with Trotec.

Infrared cameras unmask leaks the human eye fails to see

save energy with infrared cameras

An infrared camera is a highly sophisticated piece of equipment. One of its outstanding features is its ability to detect energy leaks in buildings using infrared technology and to make these leaks visible to the naked eye.

Infrared cameras can be used to create thermal images or real-time video sequences of the outer walls of buildings or the rooms inside in order to allow you to determine where the chinks and gaps in your building’s insulation are so that immediate steps can be taken to remedy the situation and cut spiralling energy costs.

The thermal images which the camera generates reveal a fascinating colour spectrum which clearly distinguishes between cold and warm spots. Warm colours like red, yellow or orange represent the warm spots, the places where warm air and precious energy is seeping out of the building. Cooler colours, like green and blue, show you where the cold spots are. These are the places where cold air is making its way into the building, often making heating futile.

Inspections which are carried out on the outside of buildings are especially effective, because they show you just where the thermal bridges and cold leaks are. Such inspections are even more effective in the colder winter months when the warmth that escapes through any leaks or cracks in the building is captured vividly in strong shades of colour by the infrared camera. Typical weak spots from an insulation point-of-view are poorly sealed windows or doors, windows and doors with simple glazing or even whole facades or roofs which have been poorly insulated.

How can I put the results of my thermal imaging camera to best use?

The results provide restoration and renovation experts with valuable information which forms the basis of their calculations and their further actions. But the results can be equally valuable for tenants and home-owners who can then decide which course of action to they need to take.

Some of the steps you need to take can be very simple:

  • Windows – by putting up heavy curtains or drapes and sealing off windows with tape or window foil you can effectively keep the cold out and keep the warmth in
  • Doors – sealing tape and door or letterbox draught excluders, including the rather sweet homemade stuffed ones, provide a particularly effective means of combatting the cold.

Knowledge is power. Knowing where the cold leaks in your house or flat are can save you endless trouble and strife. Cupboards, cabinets, commodes and beds should not be placed up against walls that have been identified as having cold leaks. For more information see our blog article
