When it comes to saving energy and heating costs, people can become really creative. Some of them only heat those rooms which they use most. Others get one of those fancy dog draught excluders, or they close all shutters to improve the insulation of their windows. And because for every degree you turn down your heating you save a good 6 % off your next energy bill, they wear a second sweater or a third pair of socks. That is certainly one way of dealing with the problem…

But what most people tend to forget: The apparent air temperature strongly depends on the humidity levels in the room you are in!

This phenomenon can easily be illustrated when you think of the summer holidays. Have you ever been to the tropics? Exactly – the high humidity levels in such areas make the heat almost unbearable. However, when you are in the desert, temperatures seem far more moderate, although they are usually a lot higher.

How you can use this information to save on heating costs at home?

It’s quite simple really: Just make sure that the relative humidity in your home lies somewhere between the recommended limits. The comfort diagram according to Leysen and Treymark shows the combination of indoor temperature and relative humidity that is ideal to feel comfortable in your home. Whereas you need to turn up the thermostat to 20°C when the relative humidity is 40% in order to feel really comfortable, you only need to set it to 18°C when the humidity is 60% for it to feel warm and cosy.

A thermohygrometer soon pays off when it comes to ensuring that the climate in the rooms you work and live in is within the ideal limits. The Indoor Thermohygrometer BZ05 from Trotec indicates both temperature and humidity on a large, easy to read display, along with the comfort indicator that lets you know at a glance whether the indoor climate is within the perfect comfort zone.

And what happens when the humidity levels are not ideal? Well, then you know who you can turn to find a first-class humidifier or a dehumidifier at very fair prices. Don’t you?

In many parts of Germany, Trotec is already a household name. The brand name Trotec stands for premium quality products and superior service – at a price that everyone can afford. And because the name Trotec has become synonymous with indoor climate control and metrological solutions it hardly comes as a surprise that we are one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of a whole range of state-of-the art dehumidifiers, humidifiers, oil and electric heaters, infrared cameras and measuring and monitoring devices in Europe.

What does surprise some of our customers, however, is the sheer variety of applications which our machines, appliances and monitoring meters and measuring devices are suitable for and how often they are used in the course of a normal day …

The day in question began with me picking up on a project which is very close to my heart. I am restoring an old antique wardrobe which dates back to the turn of the 20th century and which has suffered considerably at the hands of time to its original splendour.

I couldn’t resist buying this fine piece of furniture, because I seem to be drawn as if by magic to such beautifully crafted items which have borne witness to a bygone age – and because the seller whose stall I stumbled on was giving it away for a song. Little did I know, however, that my wardrobe would kindle a genuine interest in my landlord, who also happens to be a carpenter and that with his help – and an array of machines and measuring devices from Trotec – my wardrobe would end up looking more beautiful than I could have possibly imagined. But first things first …

My landlord-cum-carpenter is a very meticulous and methodical man. He leaves nothing to chance. So when he produced a laser distance meter to measure out the surface of the rear panels, side walls and doors to determine just exactly how much wax he would be needing to treat the surface I nodded appreciatively to myself, especially when I saw that the meter he was holding was a BD15 one of our extremely popular measuring devices in the MultiMeasure Basic Series. My landlord not only measured out each surface quickly and with the greatest of ease, he also used the BD15 to add up the results he had obtained, which then allowed him to conclude that a medium-sized tin would be perfectly sufficient to restore the wood’s natural shine.

I spent hours sanding the surface to ensure that the thick layer of varnish that had been slopped onto my wardrobe was carefully removed. My landlord had learned of my progress and offered to lend me a hand waxing the wood. I naturally assumed that we could start straight away and accompanied him down to the cellar to where my wardrobe was standing. But instead of applying the wax, my landlord pulled out not one but two measuring devices from Trotec: a thermohygrometer, which he used to check the temperature in the cellar and a BM20 moisture meter which he used to double-to check whether the wood of my wardrobe was dry enough. As it happens the wood was, but the temperature was too low to work with wax and he therefore instructed me to bring along one of the electric heaters I had told him so much about so that we could then begin to wax the wood and protect the wardrobe’s surface while maintaining the its natural colour and grain.

I brought a TDS 50 electric heater home from work the following day and installed it in the cellar just as my landlord had said. The TDS 50 notched up the temperature in the room in no time and when it had reached a comfortable level, my landlord pried open the tin and we slowly and tenderly applied the wax in flowing circular motions circles as we breathed new life into the old yet beautifully charming wood.

Now all that’s left for me to do is to polish my wardrobe which now stands pride of place in my small but cosy flat – and to thank my landlord with a bottle of his favourite tipple. Thanks to him and jut a small selection of the professional machines and devices which are all available from Trotec I can now rest assured that all has been done to ensure that my wardrobe will survive the turn of the next century.

Trotec. Not just another name.

It is a question that has been asked since time immemorial. But what is art? Art is the product of a process within a process for art has changed and developed just as man and the notions he has regarding his existence and the perceptions he has of his environment and the society and the community he lives in have changed and developed. Art is not just a painting on a canvas, a haunting symphony, a beautiful ode or a mural on a wall. Art can be so many different things to just as many different people: it is art when it rouses the senses, when it moves, shocks or startles the beholder and it is art when the symbolism of the artist’s work leaves a deep and lasting impression, as frontiers are pushed back further and further and the DaVincis, Monets, van Goghs and Picassos of yesteryear are succeeded by the Beuys, Dalis, Warhols and Hirsts of today. Continue reading →

Yes, but is it art?

The works these artists have produced are as traditional as they are controversial. Yet whether it’s an Old Master hanging from a specially appointeded space on a specially appointed wall, a dead cow preserved in a glass case of formaldehyde or Tracey Emin’s unmade bed alive with the shockingly intimate details of her past night, there is one thing which they all have in common – they all need to be protected against the adverse or even devastating effects which the wrong indoor climate can have on such masterpieces and milestones in the history of art.

If the air in a museum or gallery is too dry, then certain materials like wood or fabric can crack, tear and become spongy and other media like paint and varnish can start to flake and peel off. And if the relative humidity is too high, then paintings, for example, can literally absorb the moisture in the air and cause the canvas or the frame to swell up and split. In addition, a relatively low relative humidity of only 65% can provide the ideal breeding grounds for mould and rust and trigger a chain of complex chemical reactions which could all seriously affect the pleasure we get from such pieces of art as well as their value. And just in case you thought this was all that a curator, museum technician, art director or gallery owner has to worry about, it is important to keep in mind that fluctuating temperatures and relative humidity levels are just about the worst thing that can happen to their precious pieces of art – short of them being stolen, of course.

That’s why it is essential that both the temperature and the relative humidity are kept at constant levels – and, paradoxical as it may at first seem, that exactly these levels can be changed so that the room climate which may be ideal for one piece of art can be varied to provide the ideal environment for another.

The whole country lay under a thick blanket of soft, crunchy snow with some parts of England reporting as much as 30 - 40 centimetres of snowfall overnight. Even schools were forced to close their doors, which only added to the children’s delight. For the rest of the nation it was a nightmare. The cold snap, the worst in 30 years, left whole villages cut off from the outer world, causing cities to become hopelessly clogged and commuters driving home from work to become stranded in their cars where the unluckier ones suffered abysmally as they spent the night on one of many thousands of miles of roads and motorways across the country that had turned into treacherous ice rinks or become impassable because of snow drifts and heavy snow. Yet despite the gruelling winter we had last year – and the winter before that – and the prospect of yet another big freeze that is forecast to take another harsh, icy grip on the UK and the rest of Europe this year, there are still some diehards out there who cannot see the sense in fitting their cars with winter tyres when the year draws to a close and the temperatures in our otherwise relative mild mainly maritime climate start to drop. The whole country lay under a thick blanket of soft, crunchy snow with some parts of England reporting as much as 30 – 40 centimetres of snowfall overnight.

Winter tyres do not only make a difference on snow-covered or icy roads. They make a difference as soon as the temperature of the road surface drops below 7 degrees Celsius – plus that is.

If you live in a rural area, or it is essential that you get to work by car, then there’s no need to wait until the roads freeze over or the first snowflakes start to fall – or for the first stockists to sell out – before you switch from summer to winter tyres. There is a whole host of organisations which propagates the use of winter tyres – not only in the country – when temperatures drop below 7C, even though this may not be a legal requirement in the UK as it is in many other parts of mainland Europe where you can be fined for becoming an obstruction or impeding the flow of traffic and held responsible for any accidents ensuing from the fact that you have failed to adapt your car to suit the prevailing winter conditions. German motorists, for example, can even count on losing at least part of their insurance cover.

Winter tyres are made of a different rubber compound that gives them a better grip on both colder and slippery, slushy or snow covered roads and they also have a different tread pattern which significantly improves the car’s handling and performance as well as considerably cutting down on braking distances in adverse winter conditions.

Two additional factors which can considerably affect the way your car handles on winter roads as well as the distance it covers before it comes to a standstill is the depth of your tyre tread and your tyre pressure. Although a tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre around its entire circumference is permissible, most organisations and agencies recommend that you do not drive on winter tyres with a tread depth of less than 3mm. One way to check to see if your tyre tread meets the legal requirement, as shown in this inventive and entertaining clip, is to take a 20p coin and place it in the main groove of the tyre tread. If the outer rim is hidden, then your (summer) tyres are safe to drive. And as to the tyre pressure…

When the temperature drops, so does the pressure in your tyres – as much as 1 psi per every 5.5C. It is therefore important that you check your tyre pressure regularly, preferably on your garage forecourt or in your drive or off-road parking space, where the temperature is the same as the surrounding environment. In addition to the points mentioned above, driving with insufficient tyre pressure can not only increase your fuel consumption and make your ride less comfortable, it can wear out the tyres’ shoulders more quickly also cause the tyres to overheat and even burst. Overinflated tyres, on the other hand, wear out the middle of the tread more quickly and can also put an unnecessary strain on other key components of the car such as the suspension.

The BY10 tyre pressure gauge from Trotec may seem small and relatively insignificant at first sight, but it is in fact a hugely useful and valuable device which allows you to check your tyre pressure and provide you with either bar or psi readings when and where you want to. It fits easily onto the most common valves and snugly into almost any glove compartment.

Don’t get caught out this winter. Make sure your journey through your next fairy-tale winter landscape is a safe one.

Despite - or probably because of all these clichés about it, the popularity of horse riding as a hobby doesn’t seem to wear off… But one thing is sure: horse riding is, without doubt, quite a time-consuming and costly hobby. One of the most important pieces of equipment a rider needs is a saddle. In my mind I see little girls who dream about winning ribbons in equestrian tournaments, or I picture Europe’s royalty wearing ridiculously huge hats and feverishly watching the world-famous horse race at Ascot, or I even think of the lonesome cowboy from a renowned cigarette commercial galloping through the American prairie… Despite – or probably because of all these clichés about it, the popularity of horse riding as a hobby doesn’t seem to wear off… But one thing is sure: horse riding is, without doubt, quite a time-consuming and costly hobby.

One of the most important pieces of equipment a rider needs is a saddle. But don’t let yourself be fooled… Finding the right saddle for your horse and your specific discipline seems like an almost impossible task to me. After an extensive research on the internet, it becomes obvious that you can easily spend a small fortune on a saddle made from the finest leather and decorated with fancy silver clasps and ornaments which are typical for a western style saddle for example.

But these valuable saddles are often stored in draughty, unheated and easily accessible tack rooms where not only thieves have a walk-over but also moisture and mould. Musty smells and mould spots are a sure sign for too much humidity in the ambient air. All the metal pieces of a saddle can start to rust with a relative humidity of only 60 %, and when the relative humidity tops 70 %, mould begins to form on your saddle. Yet when the relative humidity is too low, the leather of your saddle can become brittle and chapped.

The relative humidity in horse stables usually ranges between 60 and 80 % , which is actually quite a high value. In addition, the horse’s respiration, body heat and droppings heat up the ambient air even more. If the tack room is located in an adjacent room to the stable, severe differences in the room temperature can cause the water vapour, which is contained in the air, to settle in the room with the lowest temperature – in this case the tack room.

But would you really want to leave your valuable and precious saddle in such an environment? Probably not! On the other hand, you wouldn’t want to carry your 15 kilogram saddle into your car after every single ride either, would you?! It’s hard to find a solution to that dilemma…

Yet the answer can be so easy: Control the indoor climate of the tack room with a Trotec dehumidifier! Our dehumidifiers successfully protect your riding equipment against mould, rust or moisture damage. The dehumidifiers in the TTK S Series can be left unattended to carry out non-stop drying over a longer period because they are equipped with a special option which allows you to connect a hose through which the condense water can be conducted directly into a drain.

If you are planning on using your dehumidifier in a tack room, we would advise you to choose a model with a built-in hygrostat which will allow you to select the humidity level you like best. Another feature which comes in very handy for use in a tack room: all our dehumidifiers are standard equipped with an air filter which cleans the air effectively of germs, mould spores and pet hairs.

The dehumidifiers from Trotec ensure that your riding equipment is properly protected against the consequences of a poor indoor climate and that they won’t come to any harm through too much humidity. Well, at least we can help out with that! Because although our dehumidifiers work wonders when it comes to reducing moisture levels, they can’t fight off thieves… But what’s a horse stable without a watchdog anyway, right?!

Daylight saving time is over again and the clocks have been turned back that precious hour. Which means two things: Only 41 days to go to Christmas! (Surely there’s no harm in being reminded, is there? After all you can’t have forgotten last year’s madcap, last-minute Christmas shopping spree!) And that now the days are growing shorter it won’t be long before temperatures drop sharply and the cold sets in. During the autumn and winter months the difference between the outside temperature and the temperature inside homes, houses and buildings up and down the country is far greater than at any other time of the year. Which is why this is the ideal time of the year for taking thermographic images!

Building thermography is a highly effective means of detecting defects in the construction of buildings as well as missing or ineffective insulation. Such defects are either the result of wear and tear on the building or shoddy workmanship on the part of the builder. An infrared camera can pinpoint these problem areas accurately and reliably and provide you with conclusive evidence that can be used to remedy the situation. The defects the camera detects are not only the chinks and gaping holes in the building’s insulation that are costing half of all Brits at least £100 a year, they are also the defects which are the root of a whole myriad of problems, ranging from uncomfortable drafts and mould formation to thermal bridges and ice dams – problems that can cause home and building owners, tenants and their families endless grief and frustration.

With oil and gas prices hitting an all-time high, many home owners are already keen to stop the precious heat from escaping from their flats and houses and to relieve the bludgeoning burden which the recent hikes in energy prices have put on their strapped household budgets. In addition, many of us are dedicated to cutting down on needless waste and doing something about reducing CO emissions and our collective carbon footprint.

So, in order to ensure that you as a provider of thermographic service are best-prepared – and kitted out – at the start of the thermographic season, we would like to provide you with just the right thermography bargains at just the right time.

When you buy an infrared imaging camera in the EC Series, you have the option of buying the IC Report Professional Thermographic Software worth a staggering €1,065.05 for just another €50. And should you opt for a professional infrared camera in the IC Series, you can save not once but twice: for an additional €100 you not only get the software mentioned above, you also get a tripod mount worth a smooth €142.80. This tidy little package enables you to carry out your thermographic inspections professionally and to perform the assessments that are an essential part of such inspections. This means that you will not only be able to provide your customers with the data and expertise they need, you will also leave a lasting and highly professional impression.

Imagine you’re standing at an upstairs window looking down into your garden, your street or, if you allow your gaze to wander a little further, that part of the neighbourhood you like to call home. Just dwell on the image briefly so as give it enough time to sink in. Now imagine you’re looking out of that same window and the first thing you see is water. Nothing but water. Oh, there are still the street lamps and staunch iron lamp posts standing smartly like soldiers in straight rows along what until just a few moments ago you would have said was your street, and there’s the odd semi-submerged tree and the random traffic sign sticking out almost comically from the floods, but everything – yes, everything – else that you love and have grown used to, everything that is under the height of say your front room ceiling, has gone, simply disappeared under a deep, sweeping mass of sometimes muddy, sometimes swirling, all-engulfing water.

It is an image that strikes a chord of terror and chills your heart. And it is an image that over 2 million people in 20 of Thailand’s 76 provinces, or to put it differently a mind-boggling third of the country, are being confronted with this very minute.

The floods did not come as a surprise. They don’t always do. It was expected that the monsoon rains, which were exceptionally heavy this year, would cause canals and rivers to swell and that flood defences would be breached and that banks would burst.

But when the unstoppable water masses, which according to experts amount to over 100bn cubic metres of water, kept on coming, carrying cars, buses, drums, debris and everything and anything that obstructed their path, their arrival still came as a shock. And you, dear reader, would only begin to able to grasp the sheer scale of the devastating floods if you yourself were caught up in them and you yourself were a victim of the flood.

It is thought that those affected will have to wait up to a month before the water finds its way to the sea and water levels start to recede. Many of Bangkok’s residents have been evacuated and brought to emergency centres using military trucks, boats or makeshift rafts, while hundreds of thousands have fled to resorts along the coast as they follow the fate of the city’s capital and those who have chosen – or are forced – to stay behind.

There have been sightings of snakes, rats and even crocodiles which have escaped from flooded crocodile farms and there have also been reports of crocodile attacks on children, as they play or wade waist or chest-deep through the water to get to higher ground. In addition to these harrowing conditions, which can surely only be worse when night falls over the stricken areas, there is a desperate shortage of bottled water and foodstuffs that are normally an important part of the Thai population’s staple diet. This and the need for further humanitarian aid in the form of medication because of the high risk of mosquito bites and waterborne illnesses will put a huge strain on aid organisations, volunteers and the Thai government which will be needing in excess of £16bn to rectify the damage.

Such news and images put everything back into perspective. We realise, when all is said and done, how fortunate we are, and we realise that we need to be prepared. But we need to be prepared not only for when the floods come – and come they will, as they did last year when areas as far apart as Cornwall and Merseyside were struck by disaster – but also for the aftermath when the water has retreated and the big clean up begins.

If you’re a fire fighter, a member of the clergy or, funnily enough, a teacher, then according to a national survey carried out by at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago you’re among the 47 or so percent of the working population who like their job and who therefore, because of the impact that work has on our sense of self-worth and identity, generally lead a happier life. I am none of the above, yet I still consider myself to be even more fortunate than even the 87 percent of those men and women of the cloth for whom work is not just an endless toil that brings little or no job satisfaction but something which makes them feel that they have a purpose in life.
Are you happy with your job? If you’re a fire fighter, a member of the clergy or, funnily enough, a teacher, then according to a national survey carried out by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago you’re among the 47 or so percent of the working population who like their job and who therefore, because of the impact that work has on our sense of self-worth and identity, generally lead a happier life. I am none of the above, yet I still consider myself to be even more fortunate than even the 87 percent of those men and women of the cloth for whom work is not just an endless toil that brings little or no job satisfaction but something which makes them feel that they have a purpose in life. I enjoy writing, I enjoy working as part of a highly-motivated and creative team and I enjoy rising to new challenges and achieving the goals that we have been set and that I also like to set myself.

What I don’t like are some rather irritating and annoying side effects: Because I spend so much time working in an office and sitting in front of a computer, I often suffer from eye irritation.

My eyes are dry and reddened and sometimes they sting. The situation only gets worse in the wintertime when humidity levels in the office start to dip because of the dry central heating air, which, incidentally, is also a major cause of colds because it dries out the mucous membranes in the mouth, throat and nose thereby making you much more susceptible to infections and viruses and therefore the common cold.

So what can we do to counteract these very unpleasant side effects which office life invariably brings with it?

Tip No.1 – Make sure your eyes get enough moisture!
Makes sense, doesn’t it? Your eyes, nose and throat need moisture, so why not give it to them? The solution is painfully simple. A bottle of water placed within easy reach of your PC. All you have to do us unscrew the cap and take a big gulp every now and again during the course of the day!

Tip No.2 – Make sure you have the right room climate!
When you’re standing at your office window on a cold winter’s day as you watch the world pass by, then the chances are that the heating in your office is already doing overtime. By hiking up the heating in the room, you are automatically lowering the relative humidity. This means that the air is too dry. Too dry for our eyes and too dry for our mucous membranes. Help is only the press of a button away: an electric humidifier can change the climate in your room or office by increasing the relative humidity to much more bearable and comfortable levels. And because the humidifiers from Trotec are equipped with a built-in humidistat which constantly measures and controls the relative humidity in the room, you yourself can decide which room climate setting suits you most.

Tip No.3 – Give your eyes a break!
Sales assistants are usually on their feet all day. That’s why they like to conserve their energy and give their legs a rest whenever the opportunity arises. It’s no different when a lot of the work you do is done with the help of your eyes. Don’t stay glued to your monitor all day. Allow your mind and eyes to wander simply by focusing on something far off in the distance or something – or perhaps someone – that could take your fancy a little closer by. Fresh air also makes a welcome change. Even when you’re bogged down with work. Because when you return to your desk refreshed and invigorated, then this can only have a positive effect on your work.

Tip No.4 – If you have to wear glasses, then wear them!
Sometimes it’s forgetfulness, sometimes it’s vanity and sometimes there’s no excuse at all which could justify not putting on your glasses when you’re sitting in front of your monitor. If your eye doctor has prescribed them or your optician has recommended them, then you really should wear your glasses. Otherwise you can not only end up having dry eyes, you could also end up with a splitting headache and a number of other nauseous side effects. Contact lenses may look better on some people, but they can also exacerbate the problem of dryness and cause even more irritation.

Tip No.5 – Give your eyes a helping hand!
If your eyes are extremely sore and dry, you should consider applying a few eye drops to soothe the irritation. It’s always best to make sure that the drops do not contain any preservatives as this would only dry out your eyes even more.

By the way, according to the survey carried out by the NORC, roofers labourers, handpackers and cashiers are apparently least happy with their jobs. But what about traffic wardens, call centre operators and sewage workers?

But you know what they say: Never trust a statistic if you didn’t forge it yourself.
